Remembering Hugh Formhals: A Man of Many Passions

Hugh Formhals, a man of diverse interests and accomplishments, passed away on July 3, 2025. Born on January 27, 1946, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Formhals left an indelible mark on many lives during his 79 years.

Formhals, the son of Clyde Hugh Formhals and Oowala Rider-Formhals, grew up in Albuquerque and later attended Valley High School and the University of New Mexico (UNM). After graduating from UNM, he took a teaching job at the Navajo Nation Indian School in Window Rock, Arizona.

Throughout his career, Formhals held various vocations. He worked as a Medical Examiner Photographer and Civil Defense Coordinator. His passion for collecting extended to stamps, antiques, and rare books. One of his most notable achievements was the publication of a book on cricket, released by the publisher Longman in 1983.

Formhals' love for animals was particularly noteworthy. He had a deep fondness for Italian greyhounds, and his home was often filled with these graceful dogs. His late brother, James Alexander Formhals, shared this love for animals.

In his later years, Formhals returned to Albuquerque for an administrative position at UNM. Despite his busy schedule, he continued his passion for estate sales, a vocation he had taken up earlier in his life.
