Hurricane Erin's arrival imminent: Ocean City restricts ocean entry

The town of Ocean City is preparing for the potential effects of Hurricane Erin, as forecasts predict increasing winds and moderate coastal flooding later this week. The Emergency Management team in Ocean City, in coordination with the U.S. National Weather Service in Wakefield, Virginia, is closely monitoring the hurricane's progress.

Currently, the beach remains open in Ocean City, but visitors are advised to maintain a safe distance from the water's edge. However, due to the approaching storm, public access to the water has been closed to ensure the safety of residents, visitors, and first responders.

The National Weather Service has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for all Atlantic coastal waters. This means that tropical storm conditions, including high winds and coastal flooding, are possible within the next 48 hours. Wave action may cause significant beach and dune erosion from Wednesday into Thursday night at Ocean City beaches.

Travelers are urged to exercise caution and avoid driving through standing water whenever possible in Ocean City. The town is particularly prone to flooding during storms, especially in the downtown area.

Although the storm is expected to stay offshore, its large size could bring building waves, dangerous surf conditions, and potential coastal flooding along the Mid-Atlantic Coast throughout the week. A high risk of rip currents is also expected to persist, creating hazardous swimming and surfing conditions.

For the latest storm updates, residents and visitors are encouraged to follow the Town of Ocean City and the Ocean City Police Department on their respective social media platforms. The closure of public access to the water is a necessary precaution to ensure everyone's safety.

Stay tuned for more updates as Hurricane Erin approaches the Mid-Atlantic Coast.
