Giorgio Armani, Iconic Italian Fashion Designer, Passes Away at 91

Giorgio Armani, one of the most influential fashion designers in the world, has passed away at the age of 91. The news was announced on social media by Armani's fashion house.

Born in Piacenza, Italy, Armani moved to Milan with his family where he began his career in fashion in the 1960s. After dropping out of medical school, he found success in the fashion industry, revolutionising men's and women's clothing with his minimalistic designs.

In 1975, Armani, along with Sergio Galeotti, founded the Giorgio Armani SpA company. Today, the Armani corporation employs around 8,700 people, has over 2,000 stores, and a dozen factories worldwide.

Armani gained fame for his minimalistic men's clothing and classic women's fashion designs. He was a pioneer in men's fashion, revolutionising the industry in the 1980s by making suit jackets softer, more fluid, and more relaxed. This move was significant in men's fashion and is still a popular style today.

Armani dressed numerous Hollywood stars, including Richard Gere, Kevin Costner, Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio, Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, and Julia Roberts, to name a few. He also designed costumes for the iconic film "American Gigolo" and worked with Lady Gaga on her Enigma jazz tour.

Armani's fashion house allowed the T-shirt to be worn with a suit, a move that was significant in men's fashion. This move made Armani's designs more accessible and wearable for everyday life, contributing to his global success.

Former Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour praised Armani's work and vision, while Valentino Garavani, behind the Valentino brand, also expressed his condolences. Fashion designer Donatella Versace also expressed her sorrow over Armani's death.

Armani passed away surrounded by loved ones, and his funeral ceremony will be held privately, according to his wish. Milan's mayor has declared a day of mourning in the city for Monday.

Armani's career highlights included founding his own company, revolutionising fashion with soft-shouldered, minimalist elegance, becoming a symbol of power dressing with his men's suits, and gaining Hollywood fame. Despite health issues, he announced a comeback before his death at 91, but no posthumous career plans were publicly stated.

Armani has an estimated fortune of over eleven billion euros, making him one of the world's richest people. He never took his corporation public and turned down all takeover offers, ensuring that his brand remained in his control until the end.

Armani's influence on the fashion industry will be felt for years to come, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of designers. Rest in peace, Giorgio Armani.
