Ilie Bolojan, the Romanian Prime Minister, engages in high-level discussions with key personnel during a official trip to Moldova.
In a significant step towards strengthening bilateral ties, Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan embarked on his first foreign visit on August 23, 2022, to the Republic of Moldova.
Accompanied by Dorin Recean, Moldova's Prime Minister, Bolojan visited the picturesque village of Horești in the Ialoveni district, where the "National Treasure" Festival was underway. The visit marked a significant moment at the Leușeni - Albița border crossing point, where the two leaders held a working meeting.
Discussions between the two heads focused on investments, facilitating the movement of people and goods, economic cooperation, and major connective infrastructure projects. The leaders also emphasised the special relationship between the two countries. Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean appreciated that the bilateral relations between Chișinău and Bucharest have risen "to the most brotherly level" since Nicuṣor Dan became president and Ilie Bolojan took over as head of the executive.
Bolojan, who was previously the mayor of Oradea, was received with military honours at the headquarters of the government of the Republic of Moldova. The leaders later met with citizens of the region at the House of Culture in the village of Bardar.
During his visit, Bolojan also had a meeting with Igor Grosu, the speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, to discuss accelerating the European path and the advantages of EU accession. He reaffirmed Romania's commitment to supporting Moldova in its process of accession to the European Union.
Moreover, Bolojan discussed with Maia Sandu, the President of the Republic of Moldova, about expanding cooperation in infrastructure, energy, and cross-border development projects. He also addressed concerns about Moldovans leaving the country, emphasising the importance of better development conditions in villages and towns, and easier travel.
In a positive development, Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean mentioned that by the end of this year, the necessary infrastructure will be prepared to establish coordinated control at the Sculeni border crossing point. Furthermore, a coordinated control system is being implemented at the Albița - Leușeni border point, and starting the next day, this method of control would also operate at the point between Galați and Giurgiulești.
Bolojan stated that crossing the border should facilitate ties between the two countries, and mentioned that 9 out of 10 border crossing points on the Prut are operational. This visit marks a step forward in reinforcing the strong bond between Romania and Moldova.
