Illegal Gambling Websites' Online Presence Threefold Increase over Three Years in the UK (According to Report)

In a significant move to protect vulnerable individuals and maintain the integrity of the gambling industry, the UK Gambling Commission has taken action against 235 illegal gambling platforms. These platforms, which target a concerning number of underage individuals and those self-excluded through GamStop, have been geo-blocked or made unviable, leading to their closure.

According to a report commissioned by the Campaign for Fairer Gambling (CFG), these illegal platforms account for approximately 9% of the revenue generated in the UK online gambling sector, amounting to £379m ($511m) for the first six months of 2025.

Tim Miller, the Executive Director of the UK Gambling Commission, revealed these figures during a speech at the Peers for Gambling Reform Summit. He also stated that the regulator has issued 334 cease and desists to operators and advertisers. In addition, the Commission has flagged 45,674 URLs to search engines, resulting in the removal of over 30,605 of them.

However, Miller did not provide any new information about the exact number of illegal gambling sites targeting individuals underage or self-excluded through GamStop. The report commissioned by the CFG did not specify these figures either.

The technical intelligence firm, Yield Sec, identified over 530 illegal platforms actively targeting people in the UK. Despite this, the Commission has not disclosed the current percentage share of revenue generated by these illegal platforms.

Interestingly, the report commissioned by the CFG suggests that affordability checks and bet size restrictions are not the main reasons for the presence of illegal gambling sites in the UK. Instead, they target a wider demographic, including those who are underage and those who are self-excluded.

This ongoing battle against illegal gambling platforms underscores the UK Gambling Commission's commitment to ensuring a safe and fair gambling environment for all. The Commission continues to work tirelessly to combat these illegal activities and protect the most vulnerable members of society.
