Illegally organized car races in Bremerhaven are halted by local law enforcement
Bremerhaven Police Seize High-Performance Cars Involved in Illegal Street Racing Incident
On Monday night, September 1, the Bremerhaven Police seized two high-performance vehicles following an alleged illegal street racing incident on Langener Landstraße.
According to information provided by the Bremerhaven Police, transmitted via news aktuell, the 23-year-old driver of a VW Phaeton and the 24-year-old driver of a Mercedes E-model were moving at excessive speed towards Cherbourger Straße. The police patrol caught up to the speeders at a red light around 1:15 AM.
Upon inspection, the police found that the engines and brakes of the vehicles were severely overheated. As a result, both cars were seized as evidence and had to be towed away. The two suspects were issued citations for illegal street racing and had to surrender their driver's licenses.
Illegal street racing is a criminal offense in Bremerhaven, punishable by severe penalties according to the Criminal Code (§315d). If a street race endangers other road users, a prison sentence of up to five years may be imposed. Additionally, up to three points can be added to the driving record for illegal street racing. A mandatory medical-psychological examination (MPU) may also be required for those involved in such incidents.
The penalties for illegal street racing are not to be taken lightly. Organizing or participating in an illegal street race carries a punishment of imprisonment of up to two years or a fine. In case of personal injury during an illegal street race, a prison sentence of up to ten years can be imposed.
