The California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) recently conducted a research cruise off the California coast, with the University of California San Diego (UCSD), CalCOFI, and their collaborators playing a significant role. The cruise, originally scheduled to begin on Jan. 7, was postponed one month due to the federal government shutdown.

CalCOFI's research focuses on the management of living marine resources and has been ongoing for over 70 years. The organization conducts a multi-day survey off the California coast every quarter, following a strict schedule. This long-term commitment has made the California coast one of the most extensively studied ocean regions in the world.

The CalCOFI cruise, led by Dr. Kim Bernard, took place about 186 miles off San Diego. Despite the delay, the team was able to collect marine life specimens from the pelagic zone of the ocean. The collected marine life included copepods, a pelagic octopus, arrow worms, amphipods, a red Penaeid shrimp, and other organisms.

CalCOFI's collaboration with the California Department of Fish & Wildlife and NOAA Fisheries Service is key to its success. The federal government shutdown temporarily prevented the use of NOAA Ship Ruben Lasker, but the team was able to adapt and continue their important work.

Despite the fewer samples collected due to the shutdown, CalCOFI's research efforts remain essential for the effective management of the California coast's marine resources. The organization's studies make significant contributions to the understanding of the California coast's marine environment, and their findings are crucial for the sustainable use and conservation of its living resources.

Following CalCOFI on Twitter provides updates on images from their cruises, offering a glimpse into the fascinating world of marine life off the California coast. As CalCOFI continues its research, the organization remains committed to its mission of understanding and preserving the marine environment for future generations.
