Immediate Reopening of Subterranean Garage Ensues
The city of Brunswick is pleased to announce that the renovation of the Eiermarkt underground garage is now complete, providing residents and visitors with a modern and efficient parking solution.
The project, which began in 2021, included the renewal of outdated technical facilities, update of fire protection, renovation of ventilation systems, and electronic network. The total costs of the renovation amount to 20.1 million euros.
The underground garage, operational around the clock, now boasts 12 charging points for electric vehicles, with potential for expansion. Regular public transport runs from the Park-and-Ride parking spaces into the city center, with seven free spaces available outside the city center.
More than ten parking garages in the city center offer parking spaces throughout the day. The Wallstraße parking garage, Steinstraße parking garage, and Eiermarkt underground garage offer 24-hour parking. An online resource provides an overview of parking spaces in parking garages, public parking lots, and Park-and-Ride offers (link provided).
Unfortunately, the project faced some challenges. Findings of hazardous substances like asbestos in different building components and water ingress through outdated sealants and a challenging building joint under the former passenger roof of the Welfenhof caused delays in the completion of the project. Heavy rain in the summer of 2023 flooded parts of the underground garage and destroyed some technical equipment, further delaying the project.
To make the underground garage more resistant to heavy rainfall, the city used this opportunity to implement measures to improve its resilience. The underground garage was divided into two construction phases to facilitate future maintenance and repair work.
Deputy Mayor for Environment, Urban Greening, and High Building, Anna Katharina Hanusch, expressed gratitude for the patience of neighboring companies, residents, and all those involved in the renovation project. She emphasised that the city is committed to providing a safe and efficient parking solution for its citizens and visitors.
Exiting the underground garage with a paid ticket is possible at any time. Until November 1, the underground garage in the city center is open daily from 7 am to 9 pm. However, it's important to note that no information about the person who led the Parkhof in Brunswick before its reopening in 2021 was found in the search results.
