New Electric SUVs Shake Up the Market

The automotive world is abuzz with the arrival of several new electric SUVs, each vying for a piece of the growing EV market. Among the latest entrants are the Volvo EX30, the BYD Atto 2, and the Kia EV3.

Starting with the Volvo EX30, the Swedish automaker has introduced an entry-level model called the Core, priced at £32,850. This compact SUV boasts a range of 209 miles in its standard version, with the Extended range version offering a commendable 295 miles. The EX30 Core comes equipped with a single 268bhp motor and a 51kWh battery. Features include a rear parking camera, rear parking sensors, automatic LED headlights, 18-inch alloys, a 12.3-inch infotainment system, and a Soundbar.

Meanwhile, the BYD Atto 2 Electric SUV, marketed by BYD, the world's leading manufacturer of new-energy vehicles, is making inroads into the UK market. The Atto 2 offers a starting price of £30,850. In Germany, the Atto 2 is available starting at around €28,490 for the Active model, with the manufacturer's suggested retail price around €33,180 including VAT and freight costs. Used or demo vehicles can be found priced between approximately €27,950 and €33,700 depending on mileage and condition.

The Kia EV3, a new compact electric SUV aiming to challenge EVs like the Volvo EX30, is set to be revealed on 23 May 2024. Pricing details for the Kia EV3 are yet to be announced.

Interestingly, Toyota, despite being the world leader in hybrid powertrains, is yet to achieve a real success story for EVs. The Toyota Urban Cruiser EV, a compact electric SUV with a range of up to 250 miles, is about the size of the Yaris Cross.

The Volvo XC90, despite Volvo's plans to replace it with the electric EX90, is still being sold. The XC90 now offers more luxurious trim options: the Plus Edition and Ultra Edition. The Plus Edition, now only available as a B5 petrol or T8 PHEV, costs from £69,425, an increase of £9k compared to the outgoing Plus trim. The Ultra Edition comes with 22-inch alloys.

Each of these new electric SUVs brings something unique to the table, and it will be fascinating to see how they fare in the competitive EV market. The BYD Atto 2 Electric SUV, for instance, aims to challenge the Kia EV3, Volvo EX30, and other EVs. The Kia EV3, on the other hand, is poised to take on established players like the Volvo EX30.

As the EV market continues to grow, it's clear that competition will only intensify. With each new model, consumers have more options to choose from, ensuring a brighter, more sustainable future for automotive transportation.
