In response to suggestions for a discussion in Moscow, Zelenskyy states that Putin is not welcome in Kyiv for negotiations.
In an interview with the U.S. broadcaster ABC News, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reiterated his refusal to travel to Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, initiated by Putin in February 2022, continues to rage.
Zelenskyy stated that he cannot travel to Moscow while Ukraine is under attack, describing the Russian capital as the capital of a terrorist state. This stance was taken in response to Putin's suggestion, made at an economic forum in Vladivostok on Friday, that Zelenskyy could visit Moscow if there was a prospect of a positive outcome.
On Wednesday, Putin had also proposed Kiev as a potential location for talks. However, Zelenskyy swiftly rejected this proposal, accusing Putin of using it as a delaying tactic. He further expressed his distrust in Putin and stated that Putin is playing games with the United States.
Despite Zelenskyy's stance, at least seven countries, including Türkiye and three Gulf states, have offered to host a summit between the two leaders. France has also proposed Switzerland, specifically Geneva, as a possible venue. No agreement has been reached on the location for the proposed talks.
Zelenskyy has repeatedly called for a meeting with Putin to negotiate a ceasefire. In the interview, conducted in English, he stated that if Putin wants no meeting to take place, he invites him to Moscow. However, it seems that a resolution to the conflict may be some distance away, with both leaders maintaining their firm positions.
