In the CIS region, Kazakhstan's taxi services rank as the priciest.
In the heart of Central Asia, Kazakhstan has seen a significant rise in taxi prices over the past year. According to recent reports, 13 out of 20 regions in the country have experienced annual increases in taxi fares.
The city of Almaty recorded the highest annual increase, with prices rising by 18.4%. This was closely followed by Shymkent, which saw a staggering 37.6% increase. In contrast, the smallest annual increase was recorded in the Kyzylorda region, with a modest 2.8% rise.
These increases have placed Kazakhstan among the higher-priced countries in the CIS, with only St. Petersburg, Russia, having higher taxi prices, at $0.76 per kilometre. Compared to other CIS countries, Kazakhstan's taxi prices are significantly higher. Azerbaijan, Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Belarus, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Moldova, and Kyrgyzstan all have lower prices.
Kazakhstan's highest city, Nur-Sultan, has a cost of $0.74 per kilometre, while Almaty is slightly cheaper at $0.69 per kilometre. These prices place Almaty in 111th place globally, and Nur-Sultan in 102nd place, according to data from Numbeo and our site's report, citing Finprom.
The lowest taxi prices in the world can be found in Kyrgyzstan, the Philippines, and Moldova, while the highest are in Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Bahrain.
Despite the increases, taxi services remain popular in Kazakhstan. From January to April 2023, a total of 43.9 million passengers were transported by taxi, marking a 97% increase compared to the same period last year. The passenger turnover in the taxi sector grew by 52.5% in the same period to 843.4 million pkm.
The regions with the lowest usage of taxi services are Ulytau, North Kazakhstan, and Atyrau regions. However, the most frequent use of taxi services was recorded in Almaty (8.3 million passengers), Astana (6.5 million passengers), and the Almaty region (2.9 million passengers).
Looking ahead, the prices for taxi services in Kazakhstan are expected to continue rising. According to the National Bureau of Statistics of the Agency for Strategic Planning and Reforms of the Republic of Kazakhstan, prices increased by 1.8% compared to the previous month and by 10% in a year in May 2025.
This report does not provide information about the cost of taxi rides in cities outside of the CIS or in countries outside of the mentioned list. However, it is generally understood that other CIS countries, such as Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, have lower taxi prices compared to Kazakhstan. In these countries, taxi fares can be roughly between 50 to 100 rubles for short distances, whereas Kazakhstan's taxi costs are generally higher, often over 100 rubles.
