In the Event of Your UnforeseenAbsence, Proton Guarantees Email Safety

Proton, the privacy-focused tech company, has announced a new service called Emergency Access. This feature, available across all Proton services including Mail, Calendar, Drive, VPN, Pass, and Wallet, serves as a privacy-oriented alternative to similar services offered by Big Tech companies.

Emergency Access allows users to designate up to five trusted individuals who can manage their Proton account in case of emergencies when the account holder is unable to do so. These trusted contacts can request access to the account, and the user remains in control of who gets access during the waiting period.

The waiting period for trusted contacts to access an account can range from 1 day to several months, providing the flexibility for users to decide how long contacts must wait before access is granted. This feature is designed to help in situations such as travel restrictions, accidents, foreign occupations, or high-risk situations involving persecution by authorities.

All data in Proton services remains protected under end-to-end encryption, ensuring the privacy and security of users' information. It's worth noting that this service does not require the account holder to be present for the trusted contacts to access the account.

Trusted contacts can be easily added or removed at any time, offering users the flexibility to manage their emergency contacts as needed. The Emergency Access feature is not available as a standalone service and requires a Proton account. Unfortunately, the service does not provide details on how to obtain a Proton account if the reader is not already using it.

Emergency Access is intended to help with life's unexpected events and is only available for users on Proton's paid plans. Free plan users do not have access to the Emergency Access feature.

In addition to Emergency Access, Proton has recently launched a new service called a Microsoft Authenticator alternative. This move further solidifies Proton's commitment to providing privacy-focused solutions for its users.
