In Ukraine, political figure and previous parliament speaker Andriy Parubiy met a fatal end, prompting a criminal investigation into his death

In a shocking turn of events, Andriy Parubiy, the former President of the Ukrainian Parliament, was shot dead in Lviv, Ukraine, on August 30. The suspect accused of the murder was arrested two days later, on Monday.

President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Parubiy died from injuries sustained in the shooting. The suspect, disguised as a courier, was carrying a yellow delivery bag and using an e-bike. This connection to the case was first publicly announced by President Zelensky.

The shooting was meticulously planned, according to President Zelensky's statement. A special operation has been launched to track down the suspect, who has fled. A preliminary investigation for "murder" has been opened by the Ukrainian General Prosecutor.

Andriy Parubiy, a historian by training, was a prominent figure in Ukrainian politics. He co-founded the extreme-right party Svoboda in the 1990s and played a significant role in the "Orange Revolution" of 2004 and the Euromaidan in 2014, serving as the commander of self-defense groups during the latter.

Parubiy was also known for his advocacy for Ukrainian independence and the use of the Ukrainian language over Russian. He received international recognition in 2018 when he was received in France as President of the Rada by French counterparts François de Rugy and Gérard Larcher.

However, this meeting was denounced by several left-wing parties, including La France insoumise, with Jean-Luc Mélenchon describing Parubiy as a "neo-Nazi anti-Semite".

At this stage, authorities have not mentioned any potential Russian involvement or traced a link to its invasion of Ukraine, launched in 2022. MP Iryna Gerashchenko, vice-president of the Ukrainian Parliament during Parubiy's leadership, suggested that Russia could be behind his death.

The Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs praised Parubiy as a patriot and a statesman who significantly contributed to the defense of freedom, independence, and sovereignty of Ukraine.

In a separate news item, overnight, Russia launched nearly 600 drones and missiles on several Ukrainian regions. This escalation of conflict adds to the already tense situation in the region.

Parubiy was 54 years old at the time of his death. His passing is a significant loss to the Ukrainian political landscape and a tragic reminder of the ongoing political tensions in the region.
