Increase in Financial Losses for Omsk Companies over Last 6 Months - Identifying Struggling Sectors
In the Siberian city of Omsk, the local economy is facing a series of setbacks, as profits for organizations have decreased and losses have increased.
According to recent reports, the profits of Omsk organizations for the first half of 2025 totalled 48.2 billion rubles, representing a 4.7% decrease from the same period the previous year. This decline is particularly evident in the sectors of culture, sports, recreation, and entertainment, where losses amounted to 160.5 million rubles. Other services also saw losses, totalling 12.5 million rubles.
The losses in the real estate operations sector were also significant, amounting to 64.6 million rubles. Additionally, professional, scientific, and technical activities recorded losses of 253.2 million rubles.
Amidst these losses, the share of profitable organizations in Omsk has decreased from 73.4% to 71.1%. Conversely, the share of organizations that ended the half-year with losses has risen from 26.6% to 28.9%.
One of the reasons for these financial struggles could be the delays in the opening of some Omsk schools. It has been revealed that some schools that underwent capital repairs will not open by September 1. The renovation process has been marred by corruption and mismanagement, with local complaints that renovation funds were misused and the work was not properly done. However, specific responsible contractors or authorities were not named in the provided sources.
Despite these challenges, the processing industries, transportation and storage, trade, agriculture, electricity, gas, and steam sectors continue to contribute the most to the profits of Omsk organizations.
In the first half of 2025, Omsk companies earned 42.5 billion rubles, which is a 7.3% decrease from the same period in the previous year (43.8 billion rubles). The total losses for the city's companies increased by 21% to 5.7 billion rubles.
As the city grapples with these economic challenges, efforts are being made to investigate the issues surrounding the capital repairs to the schools and to address the losses in various sectors. The hope is that these measures will help to stabilise and revitalise the Omsk economy.
