Increased military presence in Romania as Norway delivers three additional F-16 fighter jets under their defense agreement.
The Romanian Air Force has received another three F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft, bringing the total number of delivered jets to 21. This latest delivery is part of a contract signed between the Romanian and Norwegian governments for the purchase of 32 F-16s.
The jets landed at the 86th Air Base in Borcea and will be allocated to two squadrons. Sixteen of the delivered aircraft are already in service with the 48th Fighter Squadron at Câmpia Turzii, while five will be assigned to the 571st Fighter Squadron at Mihail Kogălniceanu.
The arrival of these aircraft is expected to strengthen Romania's air defense capabilities until the transition to fifth-generation fighter jets. The full fleet of 32 F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft is expected to be delivered by the end of 2025.
The contract, known as the "F-16 Acquisition Agreement," is supported by an initial logistics package and complementary goods and services provided by the United States government. This contract is a significant step forward in modernizing Romania's military capabilities.
So far, 21 aircraft have been delivered, and they will cover Romania's air defense capabilities until the transition to fifth-generation fighter jets. The jets have a remaining service life of at least ten years, ensuring their continued use in the Romanian Air Force.
The 571st Fighter Squadron is part of the 57th Air Base "Captain Aviator Constantin Cantacuzino" at Mihail Kogălniceanu. This squadron will soon be operating the F-16 Fighting Falcon jets, further enhancing Romania's air defense capabilities.
