In a statement made in Berlin, mobility expert Constantin Gall from the consulting firm EY announced a significant surge in electric car registrations in Germany last month. According to data provided by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), nearly 39,400 electric cars were registered, marking an almost 46 percent increase compared to the same month last year.

However, the sales figures for Tesla paint a different picture. The American electric vehicle manufacturer experienced a significant decrease in vehicle sales in Germany, with around 1,400 Tesla vehicles newly registered last month – a 40 percent decrease compared to the same month the previous year. In the current year, Tesla's new registrations decreased by 56 percent.

Gall attributed the high level of electric car registrations last month to tax incentives for company cars and high manufacturer discounts. He, however, expressed scepticism about the electric mobility boom, stating that it is not as real as it seems.

While the market for electric cars has recovered this year, Chinese competitors are gaining more ground in Germany with their electric models. The largest manufacturer of electric cars in Germany showing a significant market increase compared to Tesla is Volkswagen, with its VW brand leading the German market in 2025, including the ID.7 as the top-selling electric car model in Germany from January to August 2025.

Overall, the sales of electric passenger cars remained strong, with a total of around 207,230 passenger cars newly registered in Germany last month, which is a five percent increase compared to August of the previous year. Almost every fifth new car in August was a battery-powered vehicle.

Despite Tesla's struggles in the German market, the company's impact on the electric car industry remains undeniable. The sale of electric passenger cars collapsed in 2024 due to the elimination of subsidies, highlighting the importance of incentives in driving the adoption of electric vehicles. As the market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Tesla and other players navigate the competitive landscape in the coming years.
