Early Harvest Kicks Off in Champagne Region

In the heart of France, the Champagne region has seen an early start to its annual grape harvest, with vineyards beginning to reap their bounty as early as August 21. This is the third time in a decade that the harvest has commenced in August, a sign of the changing climate.

Pierre-Henri Torchet, an organic viticulturist at the family estate in Villenauxe-la-Grande, Aube, expressed high morale as he began the harvesting process on a Thursday. Torchet's estate, like many others in the region, hired thirty-five grape pickers to help with the harvest.

The early start to the harvest was confirmed by Maxime Toubart, the president of the Syndicat général des vignerons de la Champagne. Toubart also highlighted that the vegetable cycle of the vine is shorter this year, a reflection of the warmer climate. In fact, the record for earliness was broken in 2020 when the harvest began on August 17.

While Torchet's estate started harvesting on August 21, most vineyards in the prestigious Champagne region will start harvesting between August 25 and 28. The harvest in the region is expected to last for five to six days.

Meanwhile, in Alsace, the harvest of sparkling wine will begin on Tuesday, marking a record for earliness there as well. Vineyards in Montgueux started harvesting on August 19.

Despite the early start, Torchet remains optimistic about the quality of the grapes. He stated that they are superb, a promising sign for the upcoming Champagne production. Some vineyards in the Champagne region will start harvesting from September 4, indicating a longer harvest season compared to the initial days.

The official start of the grape harvest on Thursday, August 20, was announced for the Champagne region, where the harvest began with the picking of the first grapes for Champagne production. This early start is undoubtedly a significant development in the world of wine, reflecting the impacts of climate change on the traditional wine-making regions of France.
