India Primed for Food Export Escalation to the Philippines

The Philippines has taken a significant step in enhancing its relations with India, as a high-level delegation led by Secretary of Agriculture Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. recently visited the country to discuss increasing imports of key Indian food products.

The visit, which took place earlier this month, is a part of the Philippines' efforts to diversify its supply base amid global trade uncertainties and reduce dependence on Chinese products for food security purposes.

The Philippine delegation participated in 'World Food India', India's largest food trade fair, scheduled from September 25-28, 2025. However, as of now, no Indian firms or organizations have been identified as part of the Philippine food importers' delegation.

The agreement reached between the two nations is expected to contribute to improved food security, economic expansion, and diversified trade between the two nations. The Philippines has agreed to remove restrictions on the import of Basmati rice from India, a decision that is set to significantly boost India's high-quality rice exports to the Philippines.

The discussions also resulted in a commitment by the Philippines to prioritize imports from India, with the delegation agreeing to increase imports of rice, buffalo meat, vegetables, fruits, and peanuts from India.

The Philippine delegation held discussions with officials of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and the Indian Rice Exporters Federation. The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation in agriculture, trade, and economic growth.

The global supply chains are facing uncertainty due to geopolitical shifts, making such partnerships increasingly vital. This agreement is expected to be a significant development in Indo-Philippine relations and a positive move towards enhancing bilateral trade.

In 2024, India exported agricultural products worth $413 million to the Philippines, which forms a mere 2% of the Philippines' total agricultural imports. The agreement is aimed at diversifying the Philippines' supply base and expanding its trade relations with India.

The International Rice Conference will take place on October 30-31, providing an opportunity for further discussions and collaborations between the two nations in the agricultural sector. The boost in trade is expected to be a win-win situation for both countries, promoting economic growth and enhancing food security.
