Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirm commitment to resolving disputes and enhancing India-China relations.
China and India Seek to Ease Tensions and Boost Trade
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently met in Tianjin, marking a significant step towards improving relations between the two nations. This meeting comes after a series of official visits and discussions aimed at easing some restrictions on trade and the movement of people across the border.
According to reports from state broadcaster CCTV, Xi Jinping expressed hope for the Tianjin meeting to further develop China-India relations. He stated that the border issue should not define the overall China-India relationship, and suggested that economic development should be the main focus for both countries.
In his opening remarks, Modi emphasized the importance of peace and tranquility on the border areas for bilateral relations. He also stated that India and China both pursue strategic autonomy, and their relations should not be seen through a third country lens. Modi's message was reiterated in a statement released by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.
This is Modi's first visit to China since the 2020 border clashes, and his visit is related to India's membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, is due to meet with Xi Jinping and Modi in Tianjin in the coming days.
Earlier in August, China's top diplomat Wang Yi visited New Delhi, and both China and India announced their rapprochement, pledging to restart border talks and resume issuing visas and direct flights. This move was coincidental with U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to impose 50% tariffs on India over its purchase of Russian oil.
In a positive gesture, Beijing allowed pilgrims from India to visit holy sites in Tibet in June. This visit, along with the recent developments, indicates a thawing of relations between the two countries.
Modi stated that relations with China have improved and there is a peaceful environment at the borders. He expressed optimism about the future of China-India relations, and emphasized that these relations should not be influenced by relationships with third countries.
The upcoming meetings in Tianjin are expected to provide a platform for further discussions and agreements between the leaders of China, India, and Russia. These discussions will likely focus on strengthening economic ties, resolving border disputes, and fostering peace and stability in the region.
