Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been actively engaging in discussions regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, as he attends the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in the Chinese port city of Tianjin.

On Saturday, Modi spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, during which they exchanged views on the ongoing conflict and its humanitarian aspects. Zelensky reaffirmed Ukraine's desire to hold a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, while Modi offered India's full support.

However, India has avoided condemning Russia's war in Ukraine, instead positioning itself as a mediator between the two adversaries. This stance is likely due to India's long-standing ties with Moscow, which have persisted despite efforts to draw closer to Western allies on security matters.

During the SCO summit, Modi is also expected to meet Putin on Monday. The summit will be attended by leaders from more than 20 countries, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iranian President Massud Peseschkian, who met with Putin before or after the summit.

Modi has expressed his support for all efforts towards restoring peace and stability in Ukraine. However, efforts to end the war have stalled, with Moscow playing down the likelihood of a Putin-Zelensky summit.

In a separate development, India has made it clear that it will not "bow down" to the U.S.'s decision to raise tariffs on its goods to 50% in retaliation for New Delhi's purchase of Russian oil.

The conversation between Modi and Zelensky was reportedly productive and important, focusing on restoring peace and stability in Ukraine. As the situation in Ukraine continues to unfold, India's role as a potential mediator could prove crucial in finding a resolution to the conflict.
