India's monsoon season has proven to be a bountiful one, with several regions experiencing a significant rain surplus, according to the Central Water Commission. The country's northern region, Jammu and Kashmir, has seen a rain surplus of over 37%.

The surplus rainfall has positively impacted the storage levels of major reservoirs across the country. In the southern region, the storage level in 45 reservoirs is 89% or 48.75 BCM of the 54.939 BCM capacity. Reservoirs in Tamil Nadu are filled over 96%, and in Karnataka, they are filled 90%. In the central region, the storage level in 28 reservoirs is 86.98% or 42.262 BCM of the 48.588 BCM capacity.

The western region, too, has seen a substantial increase in reservoir levels. The level in 50 reservoirs is 88.63% of the 37.357 BCM capacity, at 33.111 BCM. In Chhattisgarh, the storage level is 85%, in Madhya Pradesh it is 90%, in Uttarakhand it is 87.5%, and in Uttar Pradesh it is 69.5%.

However, not all regions have been as fortunate. The levels in Assam, Nagaland, and Odisha are lower than 75%. In the eastern region, the storage level in 27 reservoirs is 71.47% of the 21.759 BCM capacity. The levels in Mizoram are not specified, but in Tripura it is 94%, and in Bihar it is 83%.

The level in Maharashtra and Gujarat is 95.85% and 80.79% respectively. Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, Telangana also report high levels, at 79% and 86% respectively.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that the monsoon will remain active this month, which may cause further increases in the level of major reservoirs. This positive trend could be a significant relief for farmers and the overall economy, as the country grapples with the aftermath of the recent heatwave.
