In the German city of Bottrop, the Municipal Public Order Service (KOD) has taken action to ensure the safety of pedestrians in the city centre. Last week, the KOD, under the direction of Ordnance Office Director, Michael Althammer, conducted targeted spot checks in the pedestrian zone.

The focus of these checks was on the unauthorized use of bicycles and e-scooters in the zone. The checks were prompted by an increasing number of complaints from the public about dangerous situations and near-accidents in the pedestrian zone.

The pedestrian zone, heavily frequented by families with children and elderly people, is a protected area primarily intended for the safety and use of pedestrians. Those who drive through the pedestrian zone with a bicycle or e-scooter endanger others and accept the risk of accidents. Compliance with the rules in the pedestrian zone is particularly important due to the potential for severe injuries in a collision.

During the checks, the KOD identified 169 violations. Each violation resulted in a fine of 25 euros. However, the Ordnance Office aims not only to penalize violations but also to prevent them through presence and education.

The goal of the checks is to ensure long-term safety in the city centre. The Ordnance Office Director, Michael Althammer, emphasized that the pedestrian zone is a space where everyone should feel safe and secure. He stated, "The pedestrian zone is a protected area primarily intended for the safety and use of pedestrians."

The Ordnance Office will continue conducting checks in the coming weeks to ensure that the pedestrian zone remains a safe space for all. The public is encouraged to report any dangerous situations or near-accidents to the authorities to help maintain the safety of the city centre.
