industry leaders encouraged to attend steel-focused summits by Merz

The German steel industry is facing a tough time, and a summit has been called to discuss potential aid and long-term maintenance of production. Chancellor Friedrich Merz, leader of the CDU party, has invited industry representatives to the Chancellery in Berlin.

The summit will bring together government ministers, including Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil, Economic Minister Katherina Reiche, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, and Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt. The meeting is part of broader high-level discussions on economic and security policies between Germany and France. Representatives from steel companies and unions like the Metallgewerkschaft IG Metall will also be present, participating in consultations related to the steel sector's challenges.

The challenges facing the German steel industry are numerous. Domestic demand weakness and high energy prices have been causing problems, exacerbated by the recent increase in steel and aluminum tariffs by US President Donald Trump. Tariffs have now been imposed on hundreds of additional products, including motorcycles and crane vehicles.

The US tariffs and dumping offers from China have put further pressure on the industry. In the first half of the year, domestic raw steel production fell by nearly 12 percent, down to 17.1 million tons.

The goal of the summit is to find ways to address these challenges and ensure the long-term sustainability of the steel industry in Germany. The industry meeting will involve discussions with producers and employee representatives.

The call for this summit came from Vice-Chancellor Lars Klingbeil (SPD) and several federal states, who had previously advocated for an industry meeting to discuss possible aid. The coalition talks in Berlin were the context for Merz's statement.

The summit is set to take place at the Chancellery in Berlin, with discussions focusing on finding solutions to maintain steel production in Germany in the long term. The steel industry's future is at stake, and this summit represents a significant step towards finding a solution.
