Pedestrian Zone Safety Measures Enforced in Bottrop
The Municipal Ordinance Department (KOD) in the city of Bottrop recently conducted targeted focus checks in the pedestrian zone, aiming to ensure long-term safety in the city center. The checks, overseen by the Ordinance Office Director, Michael Althammer, were a response to an increasing number of complaints from the public about dangerous situations and near-accidents.
The pedestrian zone, a protected area primarily for the safety and stay of pedestrians, is frequently visited by families with children and elderly people. However, those who drive through it with a bike or e-scooter without permission endanger others, as non-compliance with regulations in the pedestrian zone can lead to severe injuries, even at low speeds.
During the checks last week, the KOD detected 169 violations. Each violation was punished with a warning fine of 25 euros. The KOD aims to act preventively through presence and education, not just punishment. The focus of the checks was on the unauthorized entry of cyclists and users of e-scooters into the zone.
Michael Althammer emphasized the importance of these checks, stating, "The safety of our citizens, especially the vulnerable groups like children and the elderly, is our top priority. We will continue these checks in the coming weeks to ensure a safer city center for everyone."
The public is encouraged to report any dangerous situations or near-accidents in the pedestrian zone to the KOD. The KOD plans to continue its efforts to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for pedestrians in the city center.
