In the heat of summer, it's essential to take extra care, especially when it comes to our little ones. Here are some tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for both children and adults.

Firstly, when it comes to dressing babies, light, body-covering clothing is preferable over sunscreen. This not only protects their delicate skin but also allows for natural body temperature regulation.

For older children, a head and neck covering, along with sunscreen, is important when outdoors. Remember, the midday sun should be avoided, and cool places or shade should be sought out.

When playing outdoors, cooling activities such as water games can be very refreshing. However, it's crucial to remember that the temperature can rise to over 40°C within a few minutes in parked cars. So, do not leave children in parked cars, even for a moment.

Living spaces should be kept as cool as possible. Use roller blinds to shade the apartment during the day, and ventilate in the morning and at night.

Staying hydrated is equally important. The German Society for Nutrition e.V. has published recommendations regarding appropriate fluid intake for children and adolescents. You can find these recommendations on their website here.

Children and adolescents should drink an adequate amount of fluids. Tips for motivating them to drink include using a variety of drinks, colourful glasses, straws (preferably reusable), shared and playful drinking breaks, and making drinks easily accessible, especially with meals.

If breastfeeding, it's important to drink more than usual. Parents and caregivers should set a good example by drinking enough fluids themselves.

Check the room temperature during a heatwave. For babies and toddlers, it should not exceed 26°C. Check your baby/toddler's body temperature by feeling the spot between the shoulder blades below the neck. The skin here should be warm but not sweaty.

Lastly, during heatwaves, wear light and light-colored clothing, and pay attention to yourself and others. Stay safe and enjoy the summer!
