Syracuse University Prepares for Football Season with Traffic Updates and New Amenities

As the football season approaches, Syracuse University is preparing for changes in traffic patterns around the JMA Wireless Dome. Vice President & Chief Facilities Officer Pete Sala shared these updates at a press conference on Tuesday.

To help navigate the ongoing construction on Interstate-81, Syracuse University is encouraging fans to download the Waze app. The app, which provides real-time traffic updates, will be particularly useful during the football season as traffic patterns around the Dome continue to change.

Syracuse University will also debut the Sala Family Plaza on Saturday, offering fans a new outdoor space to gather before games. The school has also opened Miron Victory Court, an indoor space featuring food, beverages, televisions, and high-top tables, 90 minutes before kickoff before every game.

Road closures at Fineview Place, Renwick Avenue, and Martin Luther King Boulevard are likely to impact fans utilizing the school's West Campus parking lots. To alleviate congestion, Syracuse employees monitoring traffic during games are able to communicate with Waze.

Syracuse University will provide limited bus service from its parking lots at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. (three and two hours before the game respectively), and pre-game festivities on the quad will begin at 9 a.m. The school will open Gates A, B, C, P, and its VIP entrance two hours before the opening kickoff.

The Quad Walk traditionally takes place 135 minutes before opening kickoff, and Syracuse's football team will continue to participate in this tradition on Saturday. The MLK entrance to the back of the Dome is closed permanently as part of the project, but Syracuse University will put out 16 electric signs to help direct drivers as they approach the dome.

Syracuse University Vice President & Chief Facilities Officer Pete Sala believes that those who have experience coming to the Dome will be able to navigate the I-81 construction without substantially more effort. However, the changes in traffic patterns may be more significant during non-football and non-basketball events when more people need to park in other lots.

Another reason for using the Waze app is that when Colvin Street closes, it will pose a challenge, but the university will find a way to manage it. Syracuse University will also open Miron Victory Court 90 minutes before kickoff before every game. The Sala Family Plaza will debut on Saturday.
