Inquiries arise about potential onion sausage as source of E.E.C. contamination

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, authorities are currently investigating a potential connection between a recalled batch of onion mett sausage and cases of Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC). This outbreak, which has primarily affected children between one and 15 years old, as well as some adults, has been reported in the districts of Vorpommern-Rügen and Vorpommern-Greifswald.

The source of the EHEC infections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern remains under investigation, but a meat processing plant in Schleiz, Thuringia, has recalled a batch of onion mett sausage due to the presence of EHEC bacteria. The recalled product is known as "Schleizer Zwiebelmettwurst," and it was reportedly available in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and ten other federal states.

Initially, there were no indications of a link between the recalled sausage and the EHEC cases in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. However, as the number of cases has risen to 17, as of Friday, and some of the affected individuals were tourists, authorities are now exploring this possibility.

It is important to note that the EHEC outbreak in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has also been reported in Belgium. However, the source of the EHEC infections in Belgium remains unclear and has not been linked to the recalled onion mett sausage in Schleiz, Thuringia.

The 2011 German EHEC outbreak, which was the largest EHEC epidemic in Germany to date and, in terms of HUS cases, the largest documented worldwide outbreak, spread via sprouts. In contrast, the intestinal bacterium in the current Mecklenburg-Vorpommern outbreak has not been identified as originating from sprouts.

Some of the children affected by the EHEC outbreak in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have had to be treated in intensive care units, and some have developed haemolytic-uraemic syndrome, which can lead to kidney failure and neurological disorders.

The responsible company for the Schleiz meat processing plant that produced the potentially harmful "Schleizer Zwiebelmettwurst" is Schleizer Fleisch- und Wurstwaren GmbH, located at Industriestraße 2, 07907 Schleiz. The company is cooperating fully with the authorities in their investigation.

As the investigation continues, authorities urge the public to follow food safety guidelines and to avoid consuming any recalled products. Updates on the investigation will be provided as more information becomes available.
