Insurance giant Allianz calls for reformation in the health insurance sector
In a recent statement, Oliver Bäte, CEO of Allianz and the largest health insurer in Germany, advocated for a shift towards a healthcare system similar to Switzerland's. This proposed model would include deductibles for preventive care, including vaccinations, and for those who consciously refuse Covid-19 vaccinations.
Bäte emphasised the importance of personal responsibility in health management, stating that it's wrong for the community to pay for those who consciously refuse a Covid-19 vaccination. He also suggested moving away from the principle of community payment for individuals' poor dietary choices or risky sports.
The Swiss healthcare system already employs such a model, with health insurance deductibles for those who do not undergo preventive examinations or refuse Covid-19 vaccination. Bäte believes that such instruments are necessary in an aging society to prevent the healthcare system from collapsing.
However, Bäte wants to maintain the solidarity system in its current form, where the healthy community supports the sick. He has not specified how the solidarity system would be balanced with the introduction of deductibles for preventive care and vaccination refusal.
The AfD (Alternative for Germany) party has also demanded a change to the health insurance system, proposing a model similar to Switzerland's, where a deduction on contributions is provided for those who consciously decide against a Covid-19 vaccination.
It's important to note that the specific details about the current healthcare systems in Germany and Switzerland, as well as the financial implications and changes in policy regarding these proposals, have not been clearly outlined.
This proposal by Bäte and the AfD's demand for change in the health insurance system are part of a broader discussion about the future of healthcare in Germany, particularly in the context of an aging population and the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
