In a move aimed at streamlining its operations and automating manual oversight in chip production, Intel has announced a major workforce reduction. The tech giant plans to cut 2,392 positions in Oregon, accounting for around 12% of its workforce there, making it the largest employer in the state with approximately 20,000 workers.

The list of positions being cut includes module equipment technicians (325), module development engineers (302), module engineers (126), and process integration development engineers (88). Additionally, the roles of supervisors and ROC technicians are being phased out.

The decentralized approach to workforce reductions allows individual departments to decide how to meet their financial goals. This strategy has led to ongoing job losses across the company, with Intel's American operations seeing a reduction of around 4,000 positions.

The Intel divisions affected by the workforce reduction in the USA include management, engineering, marketing, and the automotive sector. Specifically, about 107 employees at Intel's headquarters in Santa Clara, California, are planned to be laid off. The reductions also concern about 15 to 20 percent of employees in the chip production department.

The number of layoffs in Oregon rose sharply from an initial count of around 500 to 2,392. This round of layoffs does not include voluntary retirement or buyouts. It is reasonable to assume that similar workforce reductions are happening in the U.S., although no specific numbers have been provided.

Intel's Oregon operations have already lost 3,000 jobs over the past year through buyouts and dismissals. The marketing functions are being outsourced to Accenture as part of Intel's ongoing job losses. The automotive division has been completely shut down.

It is important to note that no information was provided about the impact of these changes on Intel's workforce in the U.S., or about the financial goals that individual departments are expected to meet. The layoffs include 190 employees with 'Manager' in their job titles, representing 8% of the personnel being laid off.

The news of these layoffs comes as Intel began reducing staff earlier in the week and confirmed the larger number by Friday evening. The company has not yet commented on whether these changes will affect its operations in other countries, including Israel, where similar reductions are reportedly happening.
