Intense Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships leaves a formidable test for ex-Leadville victor Hannah Otto
Mountain Biker Hannah Otto Sets New Records and Represents Team USA at World Championships
Hannah Otto, a renowned mountain biker, is set to represent Team USA at the UCI Marathon MTB World Championships in Switzerland. Alongside Keegan Swenson and Cole Paton, Otto will compete in the 125km (78-mile) route with 5,025 metres (16,486 feet) of elevation gain.
Otto's impressive career in mountain biking includes multiple accolades. She is the reigning US Marathon mountain bike national champion and has set fastest known times (FKT's) on several trails, including the Whole Enchilada, Kokopelli, and White Rim trails in Utah.
One of her most notable achievements was setting the best time for the 100-mile White Rim trail by 13 minutes on May 2, 2025. This impressive feat adds to her growing list of records.
Otto's journey in mountain biking began with a background in collegiate cyclocross and cross-country mountain biking. Her experiences on the Kokopelli trail, in particular, have shaped her perspective on endurance racing. Her first attempt on the trail resulted in a missed best time by 15 minutes due to snow and cold temperatures. However, her second attempt saw her shatter the old mark with a new best time of 11 hours 53 minutes.
This experience changed her perspective on what constitutes hardship, whether in life or on the race course. Otto views her performances as a means to demonstrate the capabilities of others, pushing herself to the limit to inspire others to do the same.
In addition to her mountain biking achievements, Otto is also a two-time XTERRA Amateur World Championship winner in triathlon. She now focuses on performances lasting five to 10 hours, a testament to her dedication and resilience.
The UCI Marathon MTB World Championships is not Otto's first major competition. She has competed in all four years of the Life Time Grand Prix (LTGP) series, finishing in the top 10 each of the past three seasons. Her current placement in the LTGP is 10th, and she is looking to boost this position after three events.
As she prepares for the UCI Marathon MTB World Championships, a 20-minute film about her achievements is available on Competitive Cyclist's YouTube channel. Catch a glimpse of Otto's determination, grit, and inspiring journey as she represents Team USA in Switzerland this weekend.
