Intensified Rainfall Expected in Thailand on Sunday and Monday
The Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory for several regions in Thailand, as a low-pressure system is expected to bring increased rainfall and potential flooding from Sunday to Monday.
On Sunday, the northeast is expected to be affected in Nong Khai, Udon Thani, Nong Bua Lamphu, Loei, Chaiyaphum, and Khon Kaen. The central region will be affected in Nakhon Sawan and Kanchanaburi, while the south is expected to be affected in Chumphon, Surat Thani, Ranong, Phangnga, Phuket, and Krabi.
In the north, the low-pressure system will move through the monsoon trough, affecting Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun. Specifically, heavy rain is expected in Udon Thani, Nong Bua Lamphu, Loei, Phetchabun, Phichit, Phitsanulok, Uttaradit, lower Nan, Phrae, Lampang, Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet, Lamphun, Chiang Mai, Tak, and Mae Hong Son.
The low-pressure system, which was previously known as Storm Nongfa, is currently over the northeastern province of Loei at 4am on Sunday. The system is expected to increase rainfall in Thailand from Sunday to Monday, with heavy to very heavy rain, strong winds, and potential flooding expected in many northern and northeastern provinces.
Coastal residents along the eastern seaboard and the upper western coast of the South have been warned to watch for possible storm surges from Sunday through Tuesday. The East will be affected on Monday, with Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo, Chachoengsao, Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat anticipated to be impacted.
Strong winds are generating waves 2-3 metres high in the upper Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand, rising above 3 metres during thundershowers. The Meteorological Department has advised all vessels to proceed with caution and avoid storm areas, while small boats in these regions should remain ashore.
People in Lom Kao district, Phetchabun, are facing knee-deep floodwater due to the Pa Sak River overflowing due to water deluges from Loei province on Sunday.
On Monday, the North will continue to be affected, with the East also experiencing the low-pressure system. The Central region will be affected, with Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Kanchanaburi, and Ratchaburi expected to experience the system's effects. The South will also be affected, with Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, and Krabi expected to experience the low-pressure system.
The Meteorological Department encourages everyone to stay informed and follow local weather updates, as well as to take necessary precautions to stay safe during this weather event.
