International cricket player from Australia announces retirement from T20 matches, several months before the commencement of the T20 World Cup
Australia's fast bowler Mitchell Starc has called time on his T20I career, focusing instead on Test cricket and the 2027 ODI World Cup. Starc's retirement comes just months ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup, scheduled for February and March next year.
Starc's last T20I match was during the Super Eights stage of the T20 World Cup last year, where he suffered a 24-run loss against India. Despite this, Starc finished as Australia's second-highest wicket-taker in T20I cricket with an average of 23.81 and an economy of 7.74.
Starc, who played 65 matches in the T20I format and took 79 wickets, was part of five T20 World Cup campaigns for Australia, starting from 2012. He won the T20 World Cup with Australia in the UAE in 2021.
The retirement of Starc is not the only change in the Australian cricket team. David Warner retired from all formats last year, while Marcus Stoinis, Steve Smith, and Glenn Maxwell have also called time on their ODI careers.
Australia has a gruelling Test schedule ahead from mid-2026, including matches against Bangladesh, South Africa, New Zealand, India, England, and an Ashes series. Starc is looking forward to the away Indian Test tour, the Ashes, and the ODI World Cup in 2027.
The ODI World Cup is scheduled to be played in October and November 2027. The search results do not contain information about which Australian players will no longer participate in the next T20 World Cup for the Australian team.
