When planning a trip, ensuring your passport is valid and in good condition is crucial. Neglecting this aspect can lead to denied boarding or immigration delays, as various countries have strict rules regarding passport conditions.

Airlines and immigration officials in the UAE, for instance, meticulously inspect passports for wear and authenticity. Frayed corners, water damage, torn pages, or a scratched data chip can raise red flags and result in rejection at boarding or immigration.

In the UAE, loose pages, binding damage, or deep creases can also lead to rejection. UAE nationals with damaged, torn, or expired passports can obtain a temporary travel document called the Return Document. This document is issued within 30 minutes of approval via the MOFA website or app using UAE Pass, and is valid only for re-entry to the UAE.

Countries like Grenada and Thailand apply particularly strict rules for damaged passports. In Grenada, the damaged document must be submitted for inspection before reissuing a new one, with specific procedures and possible fees. Thailand also has strict border controls related to passport validity and entry stamps, potentially imposing fines or deportation if irregularities are found.

In Indonesia, even a tear as small as one centimetre may result in refusal of entry. In Thailand and Vietnam, water damage or defects on the photo page are grounds for denial. In the United States, a chip or biometric scanning failure may invalidate the passport.

In Australia, advisories have been issued against travelling with visibly damaged passports, as airlines may refuse boarding. At the airport, if refused boarding, an emergency travel document from the embassy may be needed (usually for return travel only).

It is important to remember that passport condition is as important as its expiry date and visa validity. Even minor damage can result in denied boarding at airports. To protect passports, UAE residents are advised to use a waterproof cover for travel, store passports in a dry, secure compartment away from liquids, not fold, bend, or clip papers inside, renew early at the first sign of wear, and regularly inspect the passport before booking flights.

Common mistakes that can lead to a damaged passport include torn or missing pages, water or liquid stains, peeling laminate, and coffee stains or smudges near the photo. If a passport is damaged, a replacement can be requested in India and other countries under "Lost/Damaged Passport".

Countries such as the UAE, Indonesia, Thailand, the United States, and Australia maintain particularly strict standards for passport conditions. To avoid stress, missed flights, and extra expenses, it is best to renew early and adhere to these standards. Travelling abroad requires a valid visa and a passport in good physical condition.
