International Solidarity Fleet sets sail for Gaza, borne by a fresh humanitarian undertaking, joining efforts from Italy as well.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, a historic civilian maritime mission, is set to depart from various Mediterranean ports on August 31st. This grassroots initiative, organised by a coalition of human rights groups, aims to deliver humanitarian aid to the population of Gaza and challenge the illegal blockade.

The flotilla, which will consist of over 40 civilian vessels, is scheduled to depart from Barcelona, a northern Italian port, Tunisia, and the south of the Peninsula on separate dates. Notable participants include Greta Thunberg, the Swedish activist, and Zerocalcare, the Roman activist and cartoonist.

In a video message, Zerocalcare's animated character calls for attention to be drawn to the operation of the Global Sumud Flotilla. The cartoonist emphasises the danger of the mission due to past incidents involving Israeli forces, who have opened fire on activists' vessels.

The needs of the population in Gaza, subjected to two years of siege, are practically incalculable. The Global Sumud Flotilla aims to bring much-needed aid and forcefully raise the issue of opening a humanitarian corridor and breaking a siege that is outside international law and any principle of humanity.

Melanie Schweizer, a lawyer and part of the international coordination team, plays a leading role in coordinating the flotilla. The goal is to break the siege of Gaza and bring humanitarian aid to the population.

In June, Greta Thunberg was already present in a mission when two vessels loaded with humanitarian aid were intercepted and blocked by Israeli authorities. The safety of the participants in the Global Sumud Flotilla will depend on international attention.

The Global Sumud Flotilla is the largest civilian maritime mission ever attempted to Gaza. It is a testament to the global solidarity and determination to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region. As the departure date approaches, the world watches with bated breath, hoping for a peaceful resolution and a much-needed break in the siege of Gaza.
