In a recent development, Syria has strongly condemned a series of Israeli airstrikes on its territory, describing them as a "blatant violation of international law and the principles of the U.N. Charter." The airstrikes, which occurred on Monday, targeted several areas of Syria, including the cities of Homs, Lataki, and Palmyra.

The Israeli military's actions are considered a breach of Syria's sovereignty and a threat to its security and regional stability. The strikes have resulted in civilian casualties and damage to military sites, vehicles, weapons, and ammunition. The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported on the strikes, confirming the destruction caused.

The Syrian government, under the interim presidency of Ahmed al-Scharaa who took over in January 2025 following the overthrow of the Assad regime by HTS fighters in December 2024, has categorically rejected any attempts to undermine its sovereignty or endanger its national security.

Israel's aggressive escalations against Syrian territory, as part of a series of such incidents, have raised concerns about the future of the already tense relationship between the two countries. The Israeli military's occupation of Mount Hermon, Israel's farthest advance from its borders, for the past seven months, and the control of a 15-kilometer (9.32-mile) wide security strip in some southern areas of Syria, have been points of contention and a source of tension.

More than 40,000 Syrians are within the occupied buffer zone, adding to the humanitarian crisis the nation has been grappling with. The Israeli army maintains control over areas in Syria beyond the Golan Heights, a situation that has been exacerbated following the events leading to President Bashar Al-Assad's ousting in late 2024.

In response to these developments, the Syrian government has called on the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, to take action to end the repeated attacks and ensure respect for Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Syrian government emphasises that these actions not only threaten its security but also pose a risk to the stability of the entire region.

As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the international community will respond to the Syrian government's call for action and whether the escalating tensions between Syria and Israel will lead to further conflict.
