International union of BRICS nations reinforces pledge to enhance multilateral cooperation amidst global instability
In a significant move, the leaders of the BRICS countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and other recent members – have reaffirmed their commitment to preserving and strengthening multilateralism. The group, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and other emerging economies, held a virtual meeting to address the demands of the Global South and to enhance cooperation, coordination, and trade within the group.
The meeting, which also included Russian President Vladimir Putin, South African Cyril Ramaphosa, and leaders from China, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, and other countries, was convened to counteract the "resurgence of unilateral measures" and the "reimposition of unilateral measures" – a reference to tariffs imposed by former US President Donald Trump.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva warned about the obstacle that secondary sanctions represent for countries to strengthen their commercial ties. Brazil is subject to a 50% tariff on its product imports, a measure imposed by the U.S. that took effect in early August. Similarly, India, a founding member of the BRICS, is among the countries most affected by these tariffs, facing a 50% tariff for buying oil from Russia.
Chinese President Xi Jinping urged opposition to all forms of protectionism and emphasized the importance of ensuring the participation of countries of the Global South in international cooperation as equals. He also expressed the need to defend the multilateral trade system centered on the World Trade Organization.
The BRICS countries have also discussed expanding mechanisms of solidarity, coordination, and trade among them to counteract the unilateral measures. In addition, they have expressed a desire to reform international institutions.
Elsewhere, the leaders of the BRICS countries have reached a consensus on the need to advance in meeting the demands of the Global South. Notably, Chinese President Xi Jinping has emphasized the importance of ensuring the participation of countries of the Global South in international cooperation as equals.
Meanwhile, the final between Alcaraz and Sinner at the US Open has been delayed by half an hour due to security measures. No further information is available about Netanyahu accusing Hamas of shooting women and children in the legs to prevent them from leaving Gaza, or about Russia summoning the Argentine ambassador in protest over espionage accusations.
In a separate development, a court has confirmed that Trump must pay $83 million to writer E. Jean Carroll for defamation. The former US President has threatened an additional 10% tariff on all countries aligned with the BRICS.
The BRICS countries will continue to work towards enhancing cooperation, coordination, and trade among themselves and advocating for the interests of the Global South in the international arena.
