Interstate 280 closure and evacuations in Woodside due to Edgewood Fire
In the afternoon of Saturday, a vehicle fire on Interstate 280 in Woodside, San Mateo County, spread to nearby vegetation, causing a significant incident. The fire, known as the Edgewood Fire, was estimated to be around 10 acres.
The incident occurred near Farmhill Boulevard, prompting the immediate dispatch of fire crews shortly before 5 p.m. As the fire spread, Interstate 280 was shut down, with northbound traffic closed at Woodside Road and southbound traffic closed at Edgewood Road.
The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office and fire crews were involved in the evacuation of approximately 10 homes along Laning Drive and Canada Road as a precaution. Thankfully, no injuries were reported due to the vehicle fire and subsequent vegetation fire.
The fire was within the jurisdiction of the Woodside Fire Protection District, with Cal Fire joining in unified command to manage the situation. Crews warned of the possibility of reduced visibility on the roads and fire personnel blocking the roads.
The freeway was reopened by 9:45 p.m., following the successful efforts to stop the forward progress of the fire on both sides of the freeway at about 6:45 p.m. A fourth alarm was called to request additional resources to the scene.
