Introducing Dolby Vision 2: The Next Evolution of Dolby's Distinct HDR Picture Quality Boosting Technology

Dolby Vision 2, a new high dynamic range (HDR) system, was unveiled at the IFA technology show in Berlin, promising a major upgrade over the original system. The new innovation is designed to deliver dramatically improved picture quality to mainstream TVs, while still ensuring an even more authentic translation of the content.

The core of Dolby Vision 2 lies in its new AI-enhanced Content Intelligence feature. This technology optimizes TV performance based on content and viewing conditions, leveraging advanced ambient light sensing capabilities (Light Sense) to further tailor the picture to your room. A new Light Sense element in Dolby Vision 2 fine-tunes picture quality through a more advanced ambient light detection system and reference lighting data from the source.

Hisense will be the first brand to introduce Dolby Vision 2 to its TV lineup. The company confirmed that Dolby Vision 2 is the first TV hardware to integrate with MediaTek Pentonic 800 with "MiraVision Pro" PQ Engine silicon chips. TCL has also announced integration of Dolby Vision 2 in its televisions, showcasing a 98-inch Quantum Dot Mini LED TV with Dolby Vision 2 support at IFA 2025. The French media company Canal+ has expressed support for Dolby Vision 2, indicating content providers are also involved.

Dolby Vision 2 offers two product tiers: a core Dolby Vision 2 tier and a step-up Dolby Vision 2 Max version. The Precision Black feature included in the Content Intelligence is a notable addition to the Max version, adding new information for the lighting conditions in the reference studio where the content was created as a reference point and adjusting the TV image based on the characteristics of the TV.

Advanced features such as bi-directional tone mapping, designed for high-performing TVs, are also part of the Dolby Vision 2 Max version. This technology takes advantage of the latest TV technologies' extreme brightness and color range capabilities.

New creative tools for content creators are also included in Dolby Vision 2, such as Authentic Motion and Precision Black, to address challenges in maintaining artistic intent while improving picture quality. Additionally, Dolby Vision 2 introduces a new Sports and gaming optimization feature with white point adjustments and motion control enhancements.

Dolby made certain claims about Dolby Vision 2 that raised questions, which were addressed with detailed responses from the company ahead of publishing this story. The company emphasised that the new system is a significant improvement over the original, with enhancements targeted at various aspects of picture quality.

In conclusion, Dolby Vision 2 promises to revolutionise the TV viewing experience with its AI-enhanced Content Intelligence, improved tone mapping capabilities, and various creative tools for content creators. The support from media and entertainment groups like Canal+ and TV manufacturers like Hisense and TCL further underscores the potential impact of this new innovation.
