Introducing the Alexa 265, ARRI's new 65-mm film camera model

MUNICH-ARRI, a renowned name in the film industry, has unveiled its latest creation - the Alexa 265. This new 65-milimeter camera promises to deliver exceptional image quality with an impressive 15 stops of dynamic range and enhanced low-light performance.

The Alexa 265's compact size and lightweight design, weighing just 7.27 pounds (3.3 kilograms), make it ideal for a variety of applications, including use on drones, stabilizers, and in space-constrained locations. This marks a significant shift in the capabilities of 65 mm cameras, opening up new possibilities for filmmakers.

ARRI's Rental division has been instrumental in supporting film production teams, collaborating closely with clients to develop customised camera solutions and technologies like the Alexa 265. While the specific external film production teams involved in the development of the Alexa 265 are not named, ARRI Rental works closely with filmmakers worldwide to optimise image quality and technology.

The Alexa 265 shares many features with its predecessors, such as the LogC4 workflow, REVEAL Color Science, and accessories found in the ARRI Alexa 35. It also offers a new filter system for even more creative control.

In terms of compatibility, the Alexa 265 is designed to work seamlessly with standard drive readers and docks, and the Codex HDE is available for use, reducing file sizes by up to 40% without compromising image quality. ARRI is also updating its SDK to ensure Alexa 265 images are compatible with all major third-party software tools.

On-set monitors can display SDR, HDR, or both in HD or ultra HD, providing filmmakers with a clear and accurate representation of their footage. The Alexa 265's improved boot-up time and power draw make it faster and more efficient to work with on set.

The camera records ARRIRAW in-camera to Codex Compact Drives, the same used in all current ARRI cameras, ensuring consistency in workflow. The Alexa 265 also uses ARRI's new-generation LogC4 workflow and 3D Lookup Tables (LUTs).

The sensor in the Alexa 265 has been revised, resulting in increased dynamic range from 14 to 15 stops and sensitivity from 3200 to 6400 EI (ISO/ASA). These improvements make the Alexa 265 a powerful tool for capturing stunning visuals in a wide range of lighting conditions.

In summary, the Alexa 265 is a significant leap forward in 65-milimeter camera technology, offering improved image quality, compact size, and efficient workflows. Its versatility and compatibility with existing ARRI equipment make it an attractive option for filmmakers seeking to push the boundaries of what is possible with large-format cameras.
