Investigated: The Reasons Surrounding Pat Cummins' Potential Absence for the Ashes Initiation
Australia's cricket captain, Pat Cummins, faces an uncertain start to the highly anticipated 2025-26 Ashes series due to a back problem. The Ashes series, scheduled to commence at Perth on November 21, will last for 48 days.
Cummins underwent routine scans on his back last week, which revealed a problem requiring careful management of his workload. This issue has kept him sidelined since July 14, the last day of the Test series in the West Indies. As a result, he missed the T20I and ODI series against South Africa at home and the Adelaide Test match of the 2021/22 Ashes.
According to a report in The Telegraph, sources privately admit that Cummins' problem is worse than expected. The report also mentions that Cummins has not played any cricket since July 14.
In the absence of Cummins, Australia managed to secure a victory in their most recent match, winning by 275 runs. Scott Boland, who has 62 wickets in 14 Tests at an average of 16.53 each, is likely to take the first-change role after Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. Nathan Lyon is expected to represent Australia in the early phase of the Ashes series if Cummins is sidelined due to his back problem.
Steve Smith is expected to lead Australia in the absence of Cummins, as he has done previously. However, the Australia management remains optimistic that Cummins will be fit in time for the Ashes. Even if fit, Cummins' workload will need managing throughout the Ashes in Australia, given the intense five-match series.
Australia may face trouble if another fast bowler misses out due to an injury or other reasons, as Lance Morris, Spencer Johnson, Jhye Richardson, and Cameron Green will not start the season. The Ashes series promises to be a challenging one, and Australia will be hoping for a full-strength squad to face England.
