Dortmund Main Customs Office Achieves Significant Results in 2024
The Dortmund Main Customs Office, a key player in Germany's customs and border control, has reported an impressive array of accomplishments in 2024.
Last year, the office processed over 18 million shipments, with over 3 million declared for import and nearly 15 million for export. This high volume of trade underscores the office's critical role in facilitating legal trade while ensuring compliance with customs regulations.
One of the significant achievements of the Dortmund Main Customs Office was the seizure of illicit goods. The Control Unit Traffic Ways confiscated nearly 300 kilograms of narcotics, while the customs officers at Dortmund Airport discovered undeclared cash totaling over 1.2 million euros. Additionally, approximately 609,000 pieces of cigarettes, cigars, and tobacco, over 3,700 liters of untaxed liquid in disposable e-cigarettes, and over 380 liters of alcoholic beverages were seized.
The office's enforcement unit was particularly active, handling over 257,000 new enforcement procedures in 2024. As a result of these procedures, a total of approximately 1.3 million euros in fines, 87 years of imprisonment, and approximately 1.5 million euros in penalties and warning fines were imposed. Moreover, over 85 million euros in outstanding claims were collected through enforcement measures.
In addition to its role in border control and enforcement, the Dortmund Main Customs Office is also responsible for the collection of various taxes. In 2024, the collected motor vehicle tax was nearly 400 million euros, and consumption taxes, including electricity tax, amounted to nearly 196 million euros.
The office's efforts to combat tax evasion were also evident, with 330 criminal proceedings initiated. Furthermore, 49 administrative offense proceedings were initiated due to undeclared currency totaling over 1.2 million euros.
The Dortmund Main Customs Office also played a crucial role in protecting public health, securing approximately 3,300 kg of food under animal disease regulations. In one instance, a 12-year-old boy was found in the arrivals hall at Dortmund Airport after being left behind by his family, and two live animals (dogs) were secured during an inspection.
The office's activities extend beyond border control and enforcement. The Dortmund Main Customs Office offers study places for administrative informatics and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies and customs offices.
In September 2024, the Regional Investigation Centre of the FKS Dortmund for the regions of Dortmund, Münster, and Bielefeld began operations, further enhancing the office's capacity to investigate and combat illegal activities.
