Inviting the public to share their thoughts on the selected design proposals for Queen Elizabeth II's commemorative park
In the heart of London, plans are underway to honour the life and legacy of Queen Elizabeth II with a memorial in St James's Park. The Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee has shortlisted five designs, each offering a unique and poignant tribute to the monarch's 70-year reign.
The public is invited to engage with these designs and express their views on the competition organiser's website. Here's a closer look at each design:
- Heatherwick Studio's design, 'The Bridge of Togetherness', symbolises unity and is part of a memorial walk honouring Elizabeth's 70-year reign. The design features stepping stones provided by 70 lily pads, a sculpture of the Queen protected by a monumental canopy of eight sculptural lilies, and renderings crafted from limestone.
- Tom Stuart Smith's design features a serpentine pathway with a sonic soundscape of memories from those who met the Queen. The design also incorporates a new configuration for the park entrance on The Mall and other significant bronze casts. A significant oak cast from Windsor Great Park is included in the design, standing in a lake and connected to the surroundings via a curved stone bridge.
- WilkinsonEyre's design includes two bridges spanning the lake in the park and claims to have the lightest footprint on the Grade 1 listed park. The design threads multiple pathways through the natural fabric of St James's Park to honour the defining themes of the Queen's life.
- Foster + Partners' design proposes a natural stone path offering a journey through a tranquil family of Royal gardens, complete with audio installations of the Queen's voice, new sculptures of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, a Community Garden celebrating UK diversity, and the Unity Bridge.
- While details about J&L Gibbons' design are not yet available, it is part of the shortlist.
The designs aim to capture the essence of memories of Queen Elizabeth II for future generations, creating an emotionally powerful and sensitive public space for reflection. The final result will be announced in early summer 2025.
For those interested in learning more about these designs, they are available for viewing and responses on the competition organiser's website. The memorial designs promise to be a fitting tribute to a monarch who touched the lives of millions.
