Ionita Leads Heading into Final Stage of EPT Barcelona Pursuit with €1.43M at Stake
Sebastian Ionita, a Romanian poker player, is currently the chip leader in the final six of the EPT Barcelona Main Event with an impressive stack of 14,725,000 chips. This is a significant turnaround for Ionita, who had only played two EPT Main Events before Barcelona with no success.
The final table of the event, which took place at Casino Barcelona with 2,045 players competing, will play down to a champion at 12:30 p.m. local time. The final table will be streamed on PokerStars' YouTube and Twitch channels on a 30-minute delay beginning at 1 p.m. local time.
The winner of the tournament will receive an impressive €1,436,000, while the fourth-place finisher will receive €493,250 and the third-place finisher will receive €641,200. The second-place finisher will receive €898,350, and the fifth-place finisher will receive €379,350. The sixth-place finisher will receive €291,800.
One of the most exciting hands at the final table so far was when Thomas Eychenne, a French player with $2.7 million in live earnings, made a trip five and bet 4,000,000 on the river to get Ionita to fold ace-high. However, Eychenne was later caught bluffing by Julian Pineda Lozano who called a bet of 850,000 on the river holding just a pair of deuces.
Sebastian Ionita's highest career live earnings of $177,000 came from a third-place finish in an event in Cyprus in May. His live earnings are now around $300,000, all of which have come from Eureka events.
Some of the other players still in contention include Anton Suarez with 8,400,000 chips, Umberto Zaffagnini with 9,525,000 chips, and Thomas Eychenne in second place with 11,375,000 chips.
The final table has seen its fair share of eliminations, with players such as Marc Foggin, eliminated in seventh place when Brzezinski made a flush on the turn, Yohan Rascar, eliminated after calling off his last chips with a pair of nines but running into Brzezinski's tens, and Sergio Carro Marin, eliminated after firing three bullets against Suarez and being beaten by a flush.
Cesar Garcia was eliminated in eighth place after his ace-jack was dominated by Suarez's ace-ten and failing to improve. Youssef Zereg had a dream start in Day 6, picking up aces and making quads.
The final six players are now in the home stretch, with the winner set to take home a life-changing sum of €1,436,000. The action is sure to be intense as the players battle it out for the title and the coveted EPT Barcelona Main Event trophy.
