Iowa Dress Club Contaminated Site, Oskaloosa, Iowa - Information Sheet, November 2018
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced plans to carry out a removal action at the Iowa Dress Club Superfund Site in Oskaloosa, Iowa, starting in late September 2025.
Located approximately 55 miles southeast of Des Moines, the site has been identified as a potential threat due to the presence of two substances: perchloroethylene and trichloroethylene.
Perchloroethylene, a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent commonly used in dry cleaning operations and as a degreaser in manufacturing plants, is characterised by the EPA as "likely to be carcinogenic to humans" by all routes of exposure. For additional information about perchloroethylene, visit the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry's (ATSDR) website.
Trichloroethylene, a colorless, volatile liquid, is typically used as a solvent to remove grease from metal parts and can be used to make other chemicals.
In 2015, EPA conducted a Removal Assessment at the site and sampling indicated the presence of both substances. The source area for the site surrounds a hand-dug well where trash, oil, and chemicals were previously dumped.
The removal action will involve an in-situ, enhanced reductive dechlorination and biodegradation treatment. This treatment aims to address the source area of the Iowa Dress Club Superfund Site.
Additional Removal Assessment activities included the collection of off-site groundwater and vapor intrusion samples. None of these samples contained concentrations above detection levels. After the treatment, additional sampling of source area groundwater and soils will be conducted to verify the effectiveness of the treatment.
The potential threat of these substances impacting local groundwater users is a concern. For additional information about trichloroethylene, visit the ATSDR's website.
The EPA has provided contact information for questions or site information: Joe Davis (davis.joe@our website) and Pamela Houston (houston.pamela@our website).
The EPA's removal action at the Iowa Dress Club Superfund site is a significant step towards addressing the potential risks posed by these substances and ensuring the safety of the local community.
