Iran threatens retaliation with missile deployment if Israel initiates another attack
In mid-June, the conflict between Iran and Israel escalated when Israel launched a bombing campaign against Iran, resulting in the death of senior military commanders, nuclear scientists, and hundreds of others. The conflict involved attacks on both military sites and residential areas.
Following the conflict, a ceasefire was established on June 24, and since then, no new information has been provided about any potential resumption of hostilities. However, Iranian officials have warned that another round of fighting could erupt at any moment.
Iranian first vice-president Mohammad Reza Aref has stated that Iran should be "prepared at every moment for confrontation." In line with this sentiment, the Iranian army is set to begin a two-day military exercise featuring a wide range of short and medium-range cruise missiles. The exercise, set to take place tomorrow, will reportedly involve the use of specific munitions, drones, and rockets, as was reported during the Iran-supported militia's recent attack.
The missiles used in the 12-day war were manufactured a few years ago. Despite this, Iran currently manufactures and possesses missiles with greater capabilities than before. Western governments have repeatedly voiced concern about Iran's missile program, calling it a threat to regional security.
France, in particular, has called for a "comprehensive deal" with Iran that covers not only its nuclear program but also its missile program and its regional ambitions. Iran, however, has insisted that its military capabilities are not up for negotiation.
Amidst these tensions, Iranian officials have stated that they do not seek war but remain prepared for any confrontation. They have emphasised that Iran's military exercises are purely defensive in nature and are aimed at maintaining the country's security and deterrence capabilities.
As the world watches, the situation between Iran and Israel remains tense, with both sides seemingly poised for any potential escalation. It is hoped that diplomatic efforts will prevail and a peaceful resolution can be found to avoid further conflict.
