In the heart of Berlin's city centre, an incident involving Berlin police and pro-Palestinian protesters from Ireland has become an international issue. The altercation, which occurred near Hackescher Market on Thursday evening, has left a woman requiring potential surgery for a reported broken arm.

As the situation unfolded, around 100 people were moving back and forth between Rosenthaler Platz and Hackescher Market. The gathering, in the context of the Middle East conflict, was dispersed as no assembly leadership could be identified.

Videos from the protest show a police officer striking a woman twice in the face with his fist. Some individuals at the gathering behaved verbally aggressively towards the officers. The woman was treated by the Berlin fire department for her injuries.

The Berlin police have confirmed they are aware of the video footage of the incident. However, the name of the officer involved has not been disclosed publicly. The case is under review, but no name has been released by authorities. No investigation has been opened against the officer yet, as it is still being examined whether the behaviour was proportionate.

The incident has sparked concerns, with Irish Ambassador Maeve Collins and other high-ranking officials contacting German authorities to express their concern. Ninety-four people were provisionally detained by the police during the dispersal of the unauthorized gathering.

In addition to investigations for insults, bodily harm, and suspected illegal residence, ninety-six investigations were initiated by the police, including for the use of symbols of unconstitutional and terrorist organizations. Investigations were also opened for physical assault on and resistance against law enforcement officers.

The Berlin police are currently investigating the incident, with ongoing investigations shedding light on the details of the altercation. The public awaits updates on the progress of the investigation and the outcome for those involved.
