ITR Filing Extension Speculation Amidst Verification and Processing Issues

The deadline for Income Tax Return (ITR) filing is fast approaching, but a potential extension looms on the horizon due to the challenges faced by the Income Tax Department in processing and verifying returns.

According to the latest figures, over 2.59 crore (approximately 2.6 crore) ITRs have been processed as of 30 August 2025. In contrast, the total number of ITR filings stands at 4,18,21,225, with more than 3.96 crore returns having been verified by the department. However, technical problems on the portal are causing verification and processing issues for lakhs of taxpayers, leading to concerns and demands for an extension of the deadline.

The demand for an extension of the tax declaration deadline has increased mainly because tax advisors and accountants are under heavy workload pressure due to the final settlements for COVID-19 economic aid programs. This has caused many to reach their capacity limits, exacerbating the situation.

Chartered accountants and tax experts are joining the call for an extension, citing the current processing issues and the difficulties faced by taxpayers. Delays in uploading documents and generating receipts after verification have been reported, adding to the concerns.

The government has already extended the ITR filing deadline by 46 days, but whether it will extend it again depends on the next 10-15 days. The exact date for refunds is not specified yet, and late filers may incur late fees and experience delays in refunds.

Crores of taxpayers might face difficulties if the deadline is not extended and issues persist. Tax experts suggest that the government may consider extending the deadline due to the current processing issues and the challenges faced by taxpayers and professionals alike.

As of 31 August 2025, the total number of ITRs processed stands at 2,59,77,545, and the number of ITRs verified by the Income Tax Department is 3,96,03,743. The demand for an extension of the ITR filing deadline is a topic of ongoing discussion, with the future of the deadline hanging in the balance.
