Mercedes-Benz Unveils New Electric GLC, Aims for Turnaround

In a bid to regain its footing in the competitive automotive market, Mercedes-Benz has introduced a new fully electric GLC, marking the replacement of the previous combustion engine and plug-in hybrid models.

The new GLC 400 4MATIC, the first model of the new electric series, is expected to start at around 73,000 euros for the 400 4Matic EQ model, with a potential entry-level model possibly around 60,000 euros. Deliveries might begin in spring 2026.

Mercedes-Benz's operating profit fell by almost 70 percent to 1.3 billion euros in the second quarter, and the profit margin in the Mercedes Car division dropped to just 3.2 percent. Sales of the S-Class declined by 25 percent, and E-Class sales dropped by 15 percent in Q2 and 8 percent in H1.

In an effort to improve the company's margins, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kaellenius has unveiled a luxury strategy, but has yet to achieve this goal. The new electric GLC is a key part of this strategy, as it is Mercedes-Benz's best-selling model.

Industry expert Ferdinand Dudenhöffer considers the new GLC an important step for Mercedes, and believes that the move to make combustion engines and electric cars look more similar is a positive development. Dudenhöffer also expects Mercedes to continue struggling in the next two quarters, but hopes for a turnaround in 2026 with the launch of the new Mercedes CLA in important markets like China.

The new CLA will play a significant role in providing Mercedes with new momentum. According to preliminary data and projections, the top speed of the GLC 400 4MATIC is 210 km/h and the range is over 700 kilometers.

Auto expert Frank Schwope, lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences in Berlin, is unsure if the new GLC will be a major success for Mercedes-Benz, as they feel the company has been directionless in recent years. Stefan Reindl from the Institute for Automobile Economy in Geislingen, Germany, shares similar sentiments, questioning whether the revised radiator grille design will appeal to relevant markets.

The new GLC features a newly designed, brand-defining chrome radiator grille. Despite not providing a specific price for the new electric GLC, Kaellenius emphasizes that the prices of electric cars and combustion engines are converging at Mercedes.

Mercedes must present a new, compelling narrative to investors and the capital market, as the term "DER AKTIONAER" currently favors BMW in the automotive segment. The Neue Klasse is expected to give Mercedes new impetus.

Overall, the introduction of the new electric GLC is a significant move for Mercedes-Benz as it seeks to regain its position in the market and improve its financial performance. The success of the new GLC will be closely watched in the coming months and years.
