Island Labor: Two-Week Stint on Mainau Welcomed Local Urban Apprentices
In the heart of Lake Constance, a 21-year-old gardener apprentice named Hilke Stevens embarked on a fascinating journey. As part of an apprentice exchange, Stevens spent nearly two weeks on the Island of Mainau, a tourist hotspot known as the "Flower Island." This was the first time an apprentice from the municipal gardening department of Nordhorn, a town in North Germany, participated in such an exchange.
The Island of Mainau, with its unique natural experiences, offered Stevens a world unlike anything she had encountered in Nordhorn. Banana plants, a rarity in North Germany, were grown on the island during the summer. Stevens helped out and documented her experience for an exchange report, which she later presented to her trainer, Reinhold Schnieders, from the Green Department of the city of Nordhorn.
Reinhold Schnieders, appreciative of the opportunity, views the offer from the initiative for training as an ideal complement to his existing training program. The tasks of the gardeners employed on the Island of Mainau are extensive and varied, including maintaining a botanical garden with around 1200 rose varieties, giant sequoias, and an Italian flower water staircase. The host gardeners explained the care measures for exotic plants to Stevens, broadening her knowledge and skills.
Stevens evaluates her exchange experience positively. She believes that the firsthand specialist knowledge has enriched her training, providing her with a unique perspective that will undoubtedly benefit her future career in gardening. The city of Nordhorn offers training in six different professions, apart from gardening. Apprentices are sought in the fields of general administration, motor vehicle mechatronics, media and information services, and event management.
