Island Leases: Exploration and Appropriation of Land

In the heart of Germany, the city of Augsburg is celebrating the success of its "Reading Island" project, as four of its school libraries have made it into the top 20 for 2024. This impressive achievement is a testament to the project's commitment to fostering reading competence and enjoyment among students.

Leading the pack is the Reading Island at Kriegshaber Elementary School, which took the top spot with an impressive 7,407 loans last year. Following closely, the Froebel Elementary School's Reading Island ranked fourth with 4,194 loans, securing a spot in the top five.

The Westpark Elementary School and Bleriot Elementary School also made the list, with the former coming in at 16th place and the latter at 17th. These schools' Reading Islands have proven to be popular choices among students, reflecting the project's success in encouraging reading.

Each of these libraries is centrally located within the school buildings, offering modern, comfortable spaces for academic and extracurricular reading and learning. The libraries are closely linked to the city library organisationally and professionally, allowing students to borrow materials using their library card at the city library as well.

The "Leselandschulbibliotheken" initiative in Augsburg was initiated and supported by the Augsburg City Library, aiming to bring the benefits of a mini city library directly into elementary and middle schools. The project's success is based on annual loan figures, indicating intensive usage and high student acceptance.

The "Reading Island" cooperation project has undoubtedly made a significant impact on the reading culture in Augsburg's schools, inspiring students to explore the world of literature and fostering a love for reading. As the project continues to grow, it is expected that more students will reap the benefits of having a well-stocked, welcoming library right at their fingertips.
